High carbon ferro manganese is an alloy of iron and manganese, usually about 70–80% Mn with 6–8% carbon. Steelmakers add it to deoxidise and desulphurise steel and to supply manganese for strength and hardness.

Buying high carbon ferro manganese
State the manganese percentage, the maximum carbon, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur, and the size range. Lumps are generally supplied in sizes such as 10–50 mm or 25–100 mm; fines are sold separately. Confirm the packing, such as jumbo bags, and the weighment basis.
When low carbon in the melt matters, silico manganese or medium-carbon grades may be used instead; see silico manganese.
