Ratio, service factor and mounting
The ratio is the input speed divided by the output speed you need – a 1440 rpm motor driving a conveyor at 48 rpm needs a 30:1 gearbox. The service factor adds margin for the type of load: uniform loads such as belt conveyors need less than shock loads such as crushers or mixers, and long daily hours need more than intermittent use. Select the gearbox at the output torque multiplied by that factor.
Mounting decides the type: helical and parallel shaft for inline drives, spiral bevel or worm for right-angle drives, planetary for high torque in a small space. Also check overhung loads from sprockets or pulleys, and the motor flange or coupling.
