Solar Mounting Structures

The module mounting structure (MMS) holds the panels at the right tilt and orientation and must survive wind, corrosion and decades of weather. Material choice depends on the site: hot-dip galvanized steel for ground-mount and heavy-duty structures, anodised aluminium where weight matters on rooftops, and pre-galvanized or zinc-magnesium coated steel for cost-sensitive members.

Fasteners should be stainless steel to avoid galvanic corrosion. Structures are designed for the local wind speed and roof or soil conditions.

Buying guide

Designing a mounting structure

The structure has to hold the modules at the right tilt for 25 years or more, through monsoon winds and coastal corrosion. Design starts from the wind speed of the site, the module size and weight, the tilt and row spacing, and the roof or soil conditions. Hot-dip galvanized steel suits most ground-mount plants; aluminium is lighter for rooftops; Galvalume sections are common for purlins and rafters.

Share the roof drawings or site layout, the module datasheet and the preferred material. Structures are often quoted together with inverters, DCDB and ACDB panels. See all solar equipment.

FAQ

Solar Mounting Structures – FAQ

How thick should the galvanizing be?

Hot-dip galvanizing is commonly specified at around 80 microns or more, to standards such as IS 4759 or ASTM A123, depending on the corrosivity of the site.
