Magnetic Separator
Magnetic separators remove iron and steel from a stream of material, protecting crushers and downstream equipment from damage and improving product purity. Overband (suspended) magnets and drum separators are common types.

Selecting a magnetic separator
An overband magnet hangs over a conveyor and lifts tramp iron out of the material, either across the belt or in line with it; self-cleaning models discharge the iron automatically. Drum separators sit at a transfer point or under a chute and are used to recover or purify material. Size the magnet from the belt width, belt speed, burden depth and the size of iron to be removed.
Fitting a magnet ahead of a crusher protects it from costly damage. See all plant machinery.
