Rotary Screen
A rotary or trommel screen separates material by size as it tumbles through a slowly rotating perforated drum. It handles sticky or wet material well and is often combined with water sprays for washing.

When to use a rotary screen
A trommel handles sticky, wet or clay-bound material that would blind a flat screen, and adding water sprays turns it into a washer. Drum diameter, length, slope and speed set the capacity and residence time; the perforation size sets the cut point. For dry, accurate sizing of crushed stone, a vibrating screen is usually better.
Feed and discharge are handled with belt conveyors, and the drum is driven through a geared motor. Replacement screen panels and wire mesh are available. See all plant machinery.
How a rotary screen works
Material enters the higher end of a slightly inclined drum. As the drum turns, undersize falls through the perforations and oversize travels down the slope and leaves at the discharge end. Fitting drum sections with different perforation sizes gives more than one size fraction in a single pass.
Water sprays along the drum wash clay and fines off the material, so one machine can screen and wash sand or aggregate. A trommel is not the best choice for dry, precise sizing of crushed stone; compare a vibrating screen for that.

Rotary Screen – FAQ
What do you need to quote a rotary screen?
The material and its maximum feed size, the output you need (sizes and TPH or m³/h), the site location and power supply. Photos of the site and existing equipment help us size the rotary screen.
Rotary screen or vibrating screen: which one do I need?
A rotary screen suits wet, sticky or clay-bound material and washing duty. A vibrating screen suits dry, accurate sizing of crushed stone. Send us the material and we will advise.
Can a rotary screen also wash the material?
Yes. Water sprays can be fitted along the drum so the screen also washes sand and aggregate.
