Sizing an excavator
Operating weight is the quickest guide to size: mini machines work in tight spaces, 20-tonne class machines are the general-purpose earthmoving standard, and larger machines suit quarries and mines. Then check bucket capacity, dig depth and reach, and whether you need a hydraulic breaker or other attachment circuit.
Tracks give better traction and stability on soft ground; wheeled excavators move faster between sites on roads. For mixed loading and digging, see backhoe loader.
