Planetary Gearboxes
In a planetary gearbox, several planet gears share the load around a central sun gear inside a ring gear. Load sharing gives very high torque density in a compact, coaxial housing, and stages can be stacked for very high ratios.
They suit heavy drives where space is limited.
Why choose a planetary gearbox?
In a planetary gearbox, the load is shared between several planet gears running around a central sun gear inside a ring gear. Sharing the load means very high torque from a small, coaxial housing, and stages can be stacked for large ratios. That suits heavy drives with limited space: concrete mixers in batching plants, slewing drives, winches, mill and crusher drives.
Share the output torque, ratio, input speed, mounting (foot, flange or shaft) and the duty. For lower torque inline drives, a helical gearbox may be more economical. See all gearboxes and the matching motors.
Where it is used
- Mixers and agitators
- Winches and slew drives
- Construction and mining machinery
- Extruders
Planetary Gearboxes – FAQ
Why are planetary gearboxes so compact?
Torque is shared between several planet gears, so each gear carries less load and the whole unit can be smaller for the same output torque.
