High Speed Gearboxes
High speed gearboxes increase or reduce speed between machines such as steam turbines, compressors, pumps and generators, often at several thousand rpm. They need precision-ground gears, dynamically balanced rotors and forced-feed lubrication.
Each unit is engineered for the power, speeds and duty of the driven train.
Inputs for a high speed gearbox
High speed gear units either step speed up – for example, a motor or turbine driving a centrifugal compressor or blower – or step it down from a steam or gas turbine to a generator. At high pitch-line velocities, gear accuracy, balancing, bearing design and forced lubrication become critical, and each unit is engineered for its application.
Share the power, input and output speeds, the driver and driven machines, the lubrication arrangement and the applicable standard. For general industrial speed reduction, see helical or parallel shaft gearboxes; for the drive end, see couplings and all gearboxes.
