MSP & FSP Panels
In a building or plant LT system, the main switch panel (MSP) is the top-level panel fed from the transformer, usually with an air circuit breaker incomer. Feeder switch panels (FSP) sit one level below and distribute power to a floor, a section or a group of loads, typically with MCCB or fuse-switch incomers.
Both are built to your single-line diagram with the busbar ratings, breakers and metering each level needs.
MSP vs FSP at a glance
| Item | FSP panel | MSP panel |
|---|---|---|
| Role in the system | Feeder / sub-distribution panel for one area or process | Main switchboard – first panel after the transformer or DG |
| Fed from | The MSP (main switchboard) | Utility transformer and / or DG set |
| Rated current (typical) | Up to 1250 A | Up to 6300 A |
| Main incomer | MCCB or switch-fuse unit | Air circuit breaker (ACB) |
| If the incomer trips | Only that section loses power | Supply to the whole building or plant is interrupted |
| Rated voltage | 380–440 V AC, 3-phase 4-wire | 380–440 V AC, 3-phase 4-wire |
| Frequency | 50 / 60 Hz | 50 / 60 Hz |
| Enclosure protection | IP42 / IP54 / IP55 | IP42 / IP54 / IP55 |
| Standard | IEC 61439-1 & 2 | IEC 61439-1 & 2 |
Typical values; ratings and configuration are fixed for each project.
Where MSP and FSP panels fit
The MSP is the first panel after the transformer or DG set: it receives the incoming supply on an air circuit breaker and splits it into large feeders. Each FSP then serves one floor, building wing or process area, so a fault on one section does not shut down the rest. Planning the split between MSP and FSP early keeps cable runs short and makes maintenance safer.
Share the single-line diagram, incomer rating, feeder list and preferred switchgear makes. An MSP often works with an AMF panel and an APFC panel. See also the PCC / PDB panel.

MSP & FSP Panels – FAQ
What is the difference between an MSP and an FSP?
The MSP is the main panel fed directly from the transformer; FSPs are fed from the MSP and supply individual sections, so a fault in one section does not shut down the whole building.
