Distribution Transformer
A distribution transformer steps the incoming high-tension supply (typically 11 kV, 22 kV or 33 kV) down to the 415/433 V used by plant, buildings and housing. It is usually the last transformer before the load and runs continuously, so low losses and reliable cooling matter more than anything else.
Oil-cooled (ONAN/ONAF) units with copper windings are built to the rating, voltage ratio, tapping range and impedance you specify, to the IS or IEC standard you specify.

How to specify a distribution transformer
Start with the kVA rating: add up the maximum demand of the plant or building, allow for future load, and check the power factor. Then fix the primary voltage of the incoming supply (11, 22 or 33 kV), the secondary voltage, the vector group (Dyn11 is common for distribution), the tapping range and the losses or energy-efficiency level your utility or consultant requires.
Outdoor units are usually fed from HT panels or a ring main unit; where space is tight, a compact substation combines the HT switchgear, transformer and LT panel in one enclosure. For indoor sites where oil is not acceptable, compare a dry type transformer.
Where it is used
- Industrial plants and MSME units
- Commercial buildings and campuses
- Residential developments
- Utility and DISCOM networks
- Solar and captive power plants (LV side)
Distribution Transformer – FAQ
Which voltage ratios are available?
Common ratios are 11 kV / 433 V and 11 kV / 415 V; other HV classes up to 33 kV and LV voltages such as 400 V or 380 V can be specified.
Do you supply transformers with on-load tap changers?
Off-circuit tap switches are standard; on-load tap changers (OLTC) can be specified where the incoming voltage varies widely.
