Dry Type Transformer
Dry type transformers use air cooling and solid insulation (typically cast resin) instead of oil, which removes the fire and leak risk of an oil-filled unit. That makes them the preferred choice inside buildings, basements and other places close to people.
They need little maintenance and can be supplied with an enclosure, temperature monitoring and forced-air fans to suit the installation.

Dry type or oil-cooled?
Dry type transformers use cast resin or vacuum-impregnated insulation instead of oil, so there is no oil to leak or catch fire and no soak pit is needed. That makes them the usual choice for basements, high-rise buildings, hospitals, malls and indoor substations close to the load. The trade-off is a higher purchase price and a need for clean, ventilated rooms.
Specify the kVA, voltages, insulation class, enclosure protection (IP rating) and whether you need forced-air cooling for extra capacity. For outdoor yards, an oil-cooled distribution transformer is usually more economical. Dry type units are commonly fed from an RMU and feed a PCC panel.
Where it is used
- High-rise buildings and malls
- Hospitals and data centres
- Indoor substations in plants
- Metro, airport and tunnel projects
Dry Type Transformer – FAQ
Why choose a dry type transformer?
There is no oil to leak or catch fire, so it can be installed indoors close to the load with simpler fire-protection requirements.
Do dry type transformers need an enclosure?
An IP-rated enclosure is usually specified for safety and protection against dust and touch; it can be omitted inside a locked electrical room.
