Power Transformer

Power transformers sit higher up the network than distribution units: they connect transmission or sub-transmission voltages to a plant or substation bus, and handle ratings measured in MVA rather than kVA.

Each unit is engineered around the rating, voltage class, vector group, impedance and cooling (ONAN/ONAF) you need, with tapping arrangements to suit the grid.

Buying guide

Power transformer selection points

A power transformer is a long-life asset, so the specification should look ahead. Confirm the MVA rating at the cooling stages you need (for example ONAN/ONAF), the HV and LV voltages, the vector group needed for paralleling with existing units, the percentage impedance that limits fault levels, and whether the tap changer must be on-load or off-circuit.

Also define the protection and monitoring fittings – Buchholz relay, oil and winding temperature indicators, pressure relief device – and the loss figures you will evaluate in the tender. For the downstream network see distribution transformers and VCB panels; for solar evacuation, see the inverter duty transformer.

Applications

Where it is used

  • Grid and industrial substations
  • Steel, cement and chemical plants
  • Solar and wind evacuation
  • Large campuses with their own HT network
