Furnace Transformer

Furnace transformers supply induction and electric arc furnaces, where the secondary current is very high, the load changes rapidly and short-circuit stresses are frequent. They are built with heavy windings, strong clamping and wide voltage regulation.

Specify the furnace type and rating, required secondary voltage steps and cooling, and the transformer is engineered for that duty.

Buying guide

What a furnace transformer must handle

Melt shops are hard on transformers. Arc furnaces draw rapidly fluctuating current and cause frequent short-circuit stresses; induction furnaces add harmonic currents from the converter. Furnace transformers therefore use heavy, well-clamped windings, generous cooling – often forced oil and water – and on-load tap changers for many voltage steps.

For a quotation, share the furnace type and rating, the converter or electrode arrangement, the secondary voltage steps, the cooling water available and the HV supply voltage. Feeder protection is usually through VCB panels; harmonic and power factor issues can be addressed with an APFC or RTPFC panel. See also our power transformers.

Applications

Where it is used

  • Induction furnaces in foundries and steel plants
  • Electric arc and ladle furnaces
  • Ferro-alloy and submerged-arc furnaces
FAQ

Furnace Transformer – FAQ

Can furnace transformers be built with on-load tap changers?

Yes. Wide tapping ranges with on-load tap changers are common so the furnace voltage can be adjusted during melting.
