Solar Inverter Duty Transformer (IDT)

An inverter duty transformer (IDT) connects solar inverters to the medium-voltage grid. Unlike a normal distribution transformer it must cope with inverter harmonics, DC injection and a load that rises and falls with the sun every day, and it often has two or more LV windings, one per inverter.

We supply IDTs specified to your inverter make, number of LV windings, MV voltage and site conditions, for ground-mount and rooftop plants.

Buying guide

Matching an IDT to your solar plant

The inverter decides most of the transformer design. Share the inverter datasheet – AC output voltage, rated power, number of inverters per block – so the LV windings can be matched; dual or multi-winding designs let several inverters share one unit. Also confirm the MV collection voltage, the required impedance, and the site ambient temperature and altitude.

An IDT normally sits between the solar ACDB on the LV side and the HT switchgear on the MV side. See the complete range of solar equipment, including solar inverters and PV modules, for a plant-level quotation.

Applications

Where it is used

  • Utility-scale solar parks
  • Captive and open-access solar plants
  • Rooftop plants with MV evacuation
  • Hybrid solar-wind plants
FAQ

Solar Inverter Duty Transformer (IDT) – FAQ

How is an inverter duty transformer different from a distribution transformer?

It is designed for harmonic currents, frequent thermal cycling and, often, multiple LV windings matched to the inverters, with electrostatic shielding between windings.

Can the transformer be matched to our inverter brand?

Yes. Share the inverter datasheet and plant single-line diagram and the transformer is specified to match.
