A brake motor has an electromagnetic brake mounted on the non-drive end. The brake engages automatically when power is removed, stopping the load quickly and holding it in position, which is essential for hoists, conveyors and machine tools.
Brake torque and supply are matched to the application.

Brake motor selection
A brake motor carries a spring-applied brake on the non-drive end. When power is switched off, the springs clamp the brake disc and hold the load; when power is applied, a coil releases the brake. This fail-safe behaviour suits hoists, inclined conveyors, gates, machine tools and positioning drives.
Choose the brake torque – usually a margin above the motor torque – the brake supply (AC or DC), the release type and, for frequent stopping, the duty and wear allowance. Brake motors are often paired with a helical or worm gearbox. See also crane and hoist duty motors and all motors.
